Travel
You may need a travel visa to go to Brazil. *** USA visitors DO NEED a visa (law of Brazilian reciprocity) ***. You should also talk with your health provider's travel clinic about possible needs (e.g., yellow fever vaccination).
Air arrival/departure
You should arrive in Manaus, Brazil (airport code: MAO). It is recommended that you book as early as convenient because Manaus is a bit remote so (a) you want to get a good price and (b) you have the possibility of getting a seat on a during-the-day direct North America – Manaus flights (e.g., Miami-Manaus on TAM airlines) instead of having to dip 4 hours south to Sao Paulo on an overnight flight, make a morning connection, and go again 4 hours north. Regarding both (a) and (b), Feb 18-22 is late in the high season (i.e., still busy but less so than Dec 15-Jan 15). You also can arrive early at the hotel if you want to get adjusted or take a little vacation; the negotiated rate holds for days both directly before and after the workshop. The usual travel sites work fine for flights to/from Manaus; a bargain hunter can sometimes find good rates for Brazil with www.brol.com .
By providing information on the housing form, you can arrange to be met at the airport by hotel personnel and taken to the boat for R$30 (one way).
Case of late arrival times / early departure times
Many flights arrive into Manaus very late (e.g., even after midnight). A guide from Ariau towers can meet you and take you for accommodations in Manaus. The hotel is: http://www.hotelmonacomanaus .com.br/ (special rate of 95 reais + 10% service tax). The guide can then meet you and take you to the boat on the next day, which has departures at 08:00 and 15:00 depending on your preference.
Similarly, if you have an early departure on the way home, you can leave Ariau on the afternoon before and stay at this hotel for one night.
